Expansion Project Launched at Al-Salameh Border Crossing
A strategic infrastructure project has been officially launched to expand and modernize the Al-Salameh border crossing and the vital road connecting it to the city of Azaz in the northern countryside of Aleppo. The initiative, spearheaded by the General Authority for Land Borders and Customs in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, aims to significantly enhance the operational capacity of the border facility.
Officials stated that the primary objective of this development is to streamline the movement of travelers and commercial freight, thereby fostering increased economic activity. The project includes the construction of modern arrival and departure halls, the establishment of new customs zones, and the integration of dedicated emergency response facilities, including specialized centers for ambulance and fire services. A key feature of the redesign is the implementation of a new traffic management system that will physically separate light passenger vehicles from heavy commercial cargo trucks, which is expected to reduce congestion and improve overall safety at the crossing.
Beyond the border facility itself, the project involves significant engineering work on the access road linking the crossing to the nearby city of Azaz. According to technical managers from the General Establishment for Construction and Housing, the road is being upgraded to a width of 32 meters to meet current international technical standards. This expansion is designed to accommodate the expected increase in transit volume and ensure the smooth flow of goods and people between the border area and the interior of the Aleppo governorate.
This initiative builds upon groundwork laid by technical teams from the General Authority for Land Borders and Customs in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. Preliminary construction and rehabilitation works began in July, marking the start of an integrated effort to overhaul the infrastructure of the Al-Salameh crossing. The ongoing development underscores a broader commitment to raising the operational readiness and efficiency of border infrastructure within the region.
As the project progresses, the authorities expect that the integration of upgraded facilities and expanded roadway capacity will have a measurable impact on the daily operations of the crossing, facilitating more efficient trade and travel logistics in northern Syria. By focusing on both the terminal infrastructure and the critical transit routes, the government aims to provide a more robust and sustainable framework for cross-border movement. The work remains ongoing as contractors focus on the reorganization of the customs yards and the finalization of the specialized service structures at the site.
