Syrian and Egyptian Unions Discuss Professional Cooperation

The General Federation of Workers’ Trade Unions in Syria, led by President Abdul Alim Al-Bakour, recently hosted a high-level Egyptian trade union delegation to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and improving cooperation mechanisms between the two nations’ labor organizations. The meeting, held at the federation’s headquarters in Damascus, aimed to promote joint trade union action and support the working class in both Syria and Egypt.
During the discussions, Al-Bakour emphasized the importance of these talks in creating new opportunities for the exchange of professional and technical expertise. He noted that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in deep, brotherly ties. The dialogue focused heavily on developing training and qualification programs designed to serve the interests of workers and enhance the efficiency of trade union and professional personnel in both Syria and Egypt.
A practical step toward this collaboration was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Professional Federation of Transport Workers’ Trade Unions in Syria and the General Trade Union for Post in Egypt. This agreement aims to organize reciprocal visits for trade unionists, facilitate the exchange of training programs, and leverage the collective experience of both parties in the transport and postal services sectors.
Jad Mohammed Jad, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Postal Workers’ Union, highlighted the deep historical and brotherly connections between the Syrian and Egyptian people. Jad stated that the labor unions of both countries are working toward a shared vision, which includes defending the rights of the working class and strengthening the role of trade union organizations in driving production and development.
This initiative is part of a series of recent Syrian trade union actions aimed at increasing engagement with Arab labor organizations. In September, the General Federation of Workers’ Trade Unions in Syria signed three similar memoranda of understanding with unions in Sudan, Lebanon, and Kuwait on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Arab Labor Conference. These agreements reflect Damascus’ commitment to activating joint Arab trade union efforts and addressing the economic and social challenges facing workers through solidarity, shared perspectives, and the exchange of technical and administrative expertise.
