Syria Joins IRENA Meetings for the First Time in Abu Dhabi

Syria participated for the first time in the meetings of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) during the 32nd session of the agency’s council, held in the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.
The Syrian delegation was led by the Director General of the National Energy Research Center, Khaled Sheikh Hammoud. During the event, the delegation engaged in comprehensive discussions regarding the future of the energy sector and the strategic priorities of the agency.
This participation aligns with Syria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation with international organizations specialized in energy. The objective is to leverage modern expertise and technologies to support the upcoming reconstruction phase in the country. Throughout the meetings, attendees reviewed the agency’s key initiatives and established shared priorities, which primarily focus on developing national energy policies, building technical capacity for personnel, and providing the institutional support necessary to upgrade energy infrastructure.
In addition to the formal proceedings, the Syrian delegation held side meetings with IRENA officials to explore potential areas of cooperation aimed at developing Syria’s renewable energy sector. The discussions covered the creation of a comprehensive roadmap for energy transition, identifying locations for potential renewable energy projects, and developing a portfolio of projects ready for investment and financing. These efforts are viewed as a fundamental pillar of the reconstruction strategy, which requires sustainable and reliable energy sources.
Furthermore, the meetings emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise and transferring modern, globally utilized renewable energy technologies to Syria. This initiative is designed to enhance the efficiency of national cadres, empowering them to manage future projects with professional and scientific standards. This step reflects the National Energy Research Center’s commitment to integrating Syria into the international sustainable energy system.
The 32nd session of the IRENA Council, which commenced on the 15th of this month in Abu Dhabi, saw broad participation from over 300 government representatives and agency delegates. The session was dedicated to discussing global challenges within the energy sector and coordinating joint efforts among member states to reach renewable energy solutions that support economic and environmental development goals for the coming period.
