Syria Joins IRENA Council Meetings for the First Time in Abu Dhabi

Syria has participated for the first time in meetings of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) since becoming a member. The attendance took place during the 32nd session of the agency’s council, held in the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.

The Syrian delegation was led by the Director-General of the National Energy Research Center, Khaled Sheikh Hammoud. During the event, the delegation engaged in extensive discussions regarding the future of the energy sector and the strategic orientation of the international agency in this field.

This participation aligns with Syria’s broader efforts to strengthen cooperation with international organizations specialized in energy. By engaging with these bodies, Syria aims to leverage modern expertise and technologies to support its forthcoming reconstruction phase. The meetings featured a comprehensive review of the agency’s primary activities and the establishment of joint priorities. Key focus areas included the development of national energy policies, the enhancement of technical capabilities for local personnel in the sector, and the provision of institutional support for energy infrastructure development.

In addition to the formal sessions, the Syrian delegation conducted a series of side meetings with agency officials to explore potential areas of cooperation aimed at fostering the growth of the renewable energy sector in Syria. Key topics of discussion included the creation of an integrated roadmap for energy transition, the identification of sites with renewable energy potential, and the development of a project portfolio ready for investment and financing. Such initiatives are considered vital pillars for Syria’s reconstruction strategy, which requires a reliable and sustainable energy supply.

The talks also underscored the importance of knowledge transfer and the adoption of modern, globally utilized renewable energy technologies within Syria. These efforts are intended to raise the efficiency of national staff, empowering them to manage future projects through professional and scientific methods. This move reflects the current trajectory of the National Energy Research Center to integrate Syria into the international sustainable energy framework.

The 32nd session of the IRENA Council, which commenced on the 15th of this month in Abu Dhabi, saw broad participation with over 300 government representatives and agency delegates in attendance. The session was dedicated to discussing global challenges within the energy sector and coordinating efforts among member states to develop renewable energy solutions that support economic and environmental development goals for the coming period.
