Drug Smuggling Attempt Via Balloons Thwarted in Daraa

Syrian anti-narcotics authorities have announced the successful interception of a significant drug smuggling operation in the southern province of Daraa. The contraband, which was destined for Jordan, was seized during an operation conducted on Thursday.

The Daraa branch of the Anti-Narcotics Department reported that the smugglers had attempted to move the illicit materials across the border using directed weather balloons. Authorities confirmed that the entire shipment was seized and removed from the smugglers’ possession. An active investigation is currently underway to identify those involved in the attempt, with the goal of apprehending the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

This latest security intervention is part of a broader, intensified effort by Syrian authorities to disrupt and dismantle the networks responsible for the trafficking and distribution of narcotics. Recent weeks have seen a series of targeted actions aimed at curbing these illicit activities.

On the ninth of this month, the Anti-Narcotics Department successfully prevented the smuggling of over 100,000 Captagon pills. In that incident, the drugs had been concealed within the spare tire of a refrigerated truck that was headed to Saudi Arabia via the Nasib border crossing.

In a separate incident, specialized security forces stationed at the Jdeidat Yabous border crossing intercepted another shipment consisting of approximately 129,000 Captagon pills. This load was discovered while it was being moved into Syrian territory.

Data from recent security operations indicates an increasing frequency of efforts by the relevant agencies to combat drug trafficking. These initiatives have successfully dismantled multiple networks involved in the promotion and smuggling of various types of narcotics. As part of these ongoing enforcement measures, authorities have confiscated and subsequently destroyed large quantities of illicit substances that these criminal networks intended to introduce into Syrian society or smuggle across the border to neighboring countries and the wider region.
