The Second Scientific Conference on Emergency Medicine commenced on Thursday in the Syrian capital, Damascus. Organized by the Syrian Emergency Medicine (ISEM) initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Syrian Medical Association, the event is hosted at the Seven Gates Hotel and will run for three days.
The conference aims to establish a specialized scientific platform dedicated to advancing the field of emergency medicine in Syria. By reviewing and discussing the latest scientific and technical developments in this vital sector, the organizers seek to bolster the readiness of medical staff working in emergency departments and improve the overall response capabilities of hospitals during emergencies.
During the opening session, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Marwan Al-Halabi, emphasized the importance of developing the country’s emergency medicine system. He highlighted the necessity of strengthening clinical training programs and utilizing high-precision simulation technologies to enhance the competence of physicians. Minister Al-Halabi noted that building an integrated national system requires concerted efforts between university hospitals, healthcare institutions, and ambulance services, alongside the reinforcement of disaster management capabilities to ensure accurate and rapid decision-making in critical, life-saving situations.
Assistant Minister of Health, Hussein Al-Khatib, underscored that healthcare personnel serve as the primary pillar for community protection. He asserted that investing in the qualification and training of these professionals is a direct investment in the lives of Syrian citizens.
In the same context, the Assistant Minister for Emergency Affairs and Disaster Management, Mounir Mustafa, explained that effective coordination between health institutions, rescue and ambulance teams, and operations rooms is an urgent necessity to reduce human losses during disasters and mass casualty incidents. Mustafa added that the ministry is working to develop field training and information-sharing mechanisms to enhance preparedness and response strategies.
