Idlib University Hosts Seminar on Robotic Orthopedic Surgery
The Faculty of Medicine at Idlib University held a specialized scientific seminar this Wednesday, focused on the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery and robotic-assisted procedures. The event, which took place at the Idlib University Hospital auditorium, saw participation from medical professionals, specialists, and academic stakeholders dedicated to advancing local healthcare standards.
The initiative was organized in cooperation with the Syrian Scientific Council and the Syrian German Medical Association (SGMA). The seminar served as a platform to discuss modern medical practices and transfer critical technical knowledge to both residents and practicing surgeons in the region.
Dr. Ziad Al-Sayed, head of the orthopedic department at Idlib University Hospital, highlighted the extensive range of topics covered during the session. The discussions centered on the practical applications of robotic surgery in joint replacements, including advanced techniques for anterior approach hip replacements and new developments in knee replacement surgery. Furthermore, the session addressed innovations in shoulder and knee arthroscopy, as well as the management of complex sports-related injuries. Dr. Al-Sayed emphasized the strategic importance of integrating these modern international surgical methodologies into the training of local medical personnel to improve patient outcomes.
Contributing to the seminar, Dr. Taha Khatib, head of the joint surgery department in Germany, provided expert insight into the integration of robotic technology within the orthopedic field. Dr. Khatib noted that robotic-assisted surgery represents a significant qualitative shift in medical practice. He explained that these systems enhance the precision of surgical interventions, which in turn leads to a reduction in post-operative complications and shorter recovery times for patients. By sharing these specialized techniques, the medical community aims to enhance the overall quality of life for patients undergoing joint replacement procedures.
Beyond the theoretical lectures, the event featured practical, applied surgery sessions. Participants observed procedures including the repair of the lateral meniscus, as well as advanced hip and knee replacement operations. This hands-on component was designed to allow attendees to witness the clinical application of the technologies discussed during the lectures.
This seminar is part of a broader series of academic and professional activities organized by Idlib University in collaboration with various medical associations. The primary objective of these ongoing efforts is to elevate the technical efficiency of the local health sector and ensure that Syrian medical practitioners remain informed about and capable of utilizing global advancements in the field of surgery. The Syrian German Medical Association, which supported the event, remains focused on fostering long-term cooperation between medical professionals in Syria and Germany to improve health systems through the exchange of expertise and the implementation of humanitarian and development projects.
