Over 2,250 Consumer Violations Recorded in Latakia and Tartus in October

The Directorates of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection in the governorates of Latakia and Tartus issued 2,253 violation reports during October. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing operational plan designed to bolster market oversight and ensure the safety and quality of goods available to consumers.

Abdul Wahab Al-Safar, Director of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection for the two governorates, stated that these results were achieved through the intensification of field patrols. The directorates conducted 1,148 patrol operations, covering 9,842 commercial establishments across various districts and markets. According to Al-Safar, these measures aim to curb instances of fraud and market manipulation while ensuring that traders adhere to current laws and regulations, thereby protecting consumer rights and fostering stability in local markets.

Regarding the directorate’s vision for enhancing the commercial environment, Al-Safar noted that regulatory efforts extend beyond simply citing violations. The department is increasingly focusing on proactive oversight by utilizing data and modern technologies, including electronic reporting systems and QR codes. These tools are intended to increase performance efficiency and allow for more precise and effective deployment of field teams. The ultimate goal, he explained, is to cultivate a commercial environment rooted in integrity and fair competition, free from monopolies and practices that harm both consumers and legitimate traders.

Al-Safar emphasized that protecting public health and food safety remains a top priority. He noted that a well-regulated market relies heavily on the voluntary compliance and awareness of traders and producers. To this end, the directorate is working to strengthen partnerships with compliant businesses through initiatives such as the “Committed Trader” program, which was launched last August. This initiative aims to create a more transparent and disciplined market, providing equal opportunities for merchants and producers who strictly adhere to quality standards and fair pricing.

These efforts coincide with ongoing updates to the regulatory mechanisms employed by authorities in Latakia and Tartus. By improving the speed of their response to violations and managing the rhythm of commercial activity, the directorates are reinforcing the role of market oversight as a key tool for upholding integrity and equal opportunity within the Syrian marketplace.
