Homs Prepares 3,500 Tons of Seed Wheat for Upcoming Agricultural Season
The General Organization for Seed Multiplication in Homs has initiated the preparation of approximately 3,500 tons of wheat seeds and over 200 tons of barley seeds in anticipation of the upcoming agricultural season. This logistical milestone follows the successful conclusion of the current harvest procurement cycle, which involved collaboration with 220 contract farmers across the governorate.
According to officials from the local branch, the organization has secured 2,226 tons of wheat, specifically selecting high-yield, locally adapted varieties such as Douma 1, Douma 6, Sham 9, Sham 11, and Sham 12. In addition to the wheat harvest, 202 tons of barley have been collected and are currently being processed for distribution.
With the procurement phase complete, the organization has shifted its focus to the storage and conditioning of the seeds. The batches have been carefully categorized by variety and development stage, utilizing traditional burlap storage methods to ensure optimal preservation. These stocks are now undergoing a rigorous process of screening, cleaning, and sterilization to maintain high quality and prevent contamination. To ensure the integrity of the reserves, a specialized oversight committee conducts weekly inspections of the warehouses, monitoring for moisture, pests, and other factors that could compromise seed viability.
Strategically, this effort is designed to meet the estimated annual demand for Homs, which typically ranges between 3,000 and 3,500 tons of seed wheat. By combining the newly procured harvest with existing reserves from the previous year, the organization reports it is well-positioned to meet the target of 3,500 tons for the upcoming planting window. This self-sufficiency is a critical component of regional agricultural planning, ensuring that farmers have access to certified, high-quality seeds in time for the sowing phase. The distribution for the upcoming season is scheduled to commence on October 1 for barley, followed by November 1 for wheat.
