Damascus Launches Sewage Network Rehabilitation in Al-Hamidiyah Souq

Work crews from the Damascus Governorate have commenced a comprehensive rehabilitation and maintenance project for the sewage network in the historic Al-Hamidiyah Souq. This initiative is part of the governorate’s ongoing plan to modernize infrastructure and address technical malfunctions that have accumulated over the past years.
The project aims to resolve persistent issues with blockages and leaks that have compromised the efficiency of the aging network. By upgrading the system, the governorate intends to ensure the long-term sustainability of essential services for the market, which remains one of the capital’s most vital commercial hubs.
Ahmed Al-Khatib, the project supervisor at the Governorate’s Directorate of Supervision, explained that the fieldwork involves the complete replacement of the main sewage line. The new installation will span 450 meters and utilize modern ethylene piping with a diameter of 50 centimeters, ensuring the infrastructure meets current engineering specifications and technical standards. The rehabilitation efforts also include the preparation of specialized rainwater drainage systems and the clearance of deep-seated blockages that have previously caused water seepage within the market’s corridors.
To prevent disruptions to the market’s heavy commercial traffic, which sees large numbers of shoppers and visitors daily, Al-Khatib confirmed that the governorate has established a specific schedule to conduct operations during nighttime hours. The work is being carried out in sequenced, carefully planned phases to keep corridors accessible to merchants and citizens, thereby allowing business activity to continue without interruption.
These efforts are part of a series of projects currently being implemented by the Damascus Governorate, in coordination with the General Company for Sewage, to improve the state of the city’s infrastructure. Recent service plans have included several other critical locations, such as the Bab Sarija market adjacent to the Al-Salkhadiya Mosque, the Al-Hal market in the Zablatani area, and maintenance and rehabilitation workshops on Al-Hamra and Al-Shaalan streets.
Through these projects, the governorate seeks to increase the efficiency of utility networks and mitigate the damage caused by heavy usage and the natural aging of the infrastructure. These works are part of the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate public facilities across various Damascus neighborhoods, aimed at ensuring public safety and preserving the aesthetic and service standards of the capital.
