Syria and Lebanon Discuss Strengthening Cultural Cooperation

Syrian Minister of Culture, Mohammed Yassin Al-Saleh, has conducted a series of official meetings in Beirut aimed at strengthening and developing cultural cooperation between Syria and Lebanon. The visit coincides with the Minister’s participation in the 67th Beirut International Arab Book Fair.

During his visit, Minister Al-Saleh met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The discussions focused on several issues of mutual interest, specifically exploring ways to enhance and support cultural exchange between the two neighboring countries.

Furthermore, the Syrian Minister held an extensive meeting with his Lebanese counterpart, Ghassan Salameh, at the National Library of Lebanon in Beirut. The discussion centered on activating bilateral cooperation across several vital sectors, including publishing, music, drama, and cinema, as well as the management of archaeological sites and museums. Both sides emphasized the necessity of establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for this cooperation through the development of a formal cultural agreement, intended to reflect the deep historical and emotional ties shared by the Syrian and Lebanese peoples.

These cultural diplomatic efforts take place against the backdrop of significant participation in the Beirut International Arab Book Fair, currently being held at the Seaside Arena on the Beirut waterfront. This year’s exhibition features 163 Lebanese and Arab publishing houses and is scheduled to continue until October 18.

The Syrian Ministry of Culture is placing special importance on these meetings, seeking to bolster the presence of Syrian culture in regional forums. By developing mechanisms for technical and academic coordination with Lebanese cultural institutions, the Ministry aims to serve the shared cultural interests of both countries. These initiatives are designed to open new horizons for cooperation in areas such as fine arts, cinematic and dramatic production, and the preservation of shared cultural heritage.
