Deir ez-Zor Hospital Expands Neonatal and Pediatric Care Units
Syrian health officials have officially inaugurated a series of new specialized units at the Al-Huweidi Hospital in Deir ez-Zor, marking a significant effort to bolster maternal and pediatric healthcare services in the region. The expansion, led by the Minister of Health and the provincial governor, aims to increase the facility’s capacity and provide critical care services that were previously unavailable to the local population.
Central to this expansion is the opening of a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the first of its kind in the province. Outfitted with ten incubator stations and advanced respiratory support systems, the unit is designed to treat critically ill newborns. By establishing these capabilities locally, health authorities aim to significantly reduce the need for medical transfers to Damascus, a process that often poses risks to premature infants and those in urgent need of stabilization.
In addition to the neonatal unit, the hospital has opened a dedicated center for treating severe malnutrition, a critical development for public health in a region recovering from years of instability. The facility is equipped with nine dedicated beds and staffed by a specialized, multidisciplinary medical team. This unit will provide a comprehensive care cycle, covering everything from the initial assessment of pediatric patients to intensive treatment protocols and long-term follow-up to ensure full recovery.
The hospital’s infrastructure improvements also include a completely renovated pediatric ward. With a capacity of 40 beds, the department has been overhauled with modernized medical and nursing equipment to provide a more secure and efficient treatment environment. These upgrades are part of a broader, systemic effort by the Ministry of Health to modernize its medical infrastructure and decentralize high-quality care, ensuring that specialized services are accessible outside of major urban centers.
During the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Health emphasized that these enhancements reflect a strategic commitment to child health, which the ministry views as a primary pillar of national healthcare policy. He noted that the ongoing integration of modern technology and the training of qualified medical personnel are essential for improving the readiness of hospitals to handle complex pediatric conditions.
This expansion is considered a vital development for Deir ez-Zor, as it strengthens the local healthcare network’s ability to offer specialized medical services to families in the area.
