Syria Participates in IRENA Council Meetings for the First Time

Syria has participated for the first time in the meetings of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) since becoming a member. The participation took place during the 32nd session of the agency’s council, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The Syrian delegation was led by the Director General of the National Energy Research Center, Khaled Sheikh Hammoud. During the event, the delegation engaged in extensive discussions regarding the future of the energy sector and the agency’s strategic directions in this field.

This involvement is part of Syria’s broader efforts to enhance cooperation with specialized international energy organizations. The objective is to leverage modern expertise and technologies to support the upcoming reconstruction phase in Syria. The council meetings provided a platform to review the agency’s primary activities and establish shared priorities, which center on developing national energy policies, building technical capacity for personnel, and providing technical and institutional support for energy infrastructure development.

Throughout the side meetings and organized events, the Syrian delegation explored potential areas of collaboration with IRENA officials to advance the renewable energy sector in Syria. Key topics of discussion included the development of an integrated roadmap for energy transition, identifying sites with renewable energy potential, and creating a portfolio of projects ready for investment and financing. These elements are considered fundamental to the national reconstruction strategy, which requires sustainable and reliable energy sources.

Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the importance of knowledge exchange and the transfer of modern, globally utilized renewable energy technologies to Syria. Such initiatives aim to raise the efficiency of national staff, empowering them to manage future projects with professional and scientific standards. This step reflects the National Energy Research Center’s commitment to integrating Syria into the international sustainable energy framework.

The 32nd session of the IRENA Council, which began on the 15th of this month in Abu Dhabi, featured broad participation from over 300 government representatives and agency delegates. The session was dedicated to addressing global challenges within the energy sector and coordinating joint efforts among member states to reach renewable energy solutions that serve the economic and environmental development goals of the coming period.
