Amidst ongoing economic challenges and the rising costs of traditional construction, prefabricated homes and caravans are becoming an increasingly popular housing alternative for low-income families in Syria’s Daraa governorate. In the town of Khirbet Ghazala, local metal construction workshops are actively producing these units. The available designs are versatile, ranging from simple layouts featuring two rooms and essential facilities to larger, three-room units complete with all basic interior furnishings. This flexibility in design and spatial configuration allows these homes to be tailored to the specific needs of individual families.
Mohammad Jihad al-Haj Ali, owner of the Al-Wissam Metal Construction establishment, noted that local market demand is primarily driven by families seeking functional, modest units that meet their basic requirements. According to Al-Haj Ali, the cost of these units typically ranges between $2,500 and $3,500 USD. The final price depends entirely on the size of the unit, the level of finishing, and the interior specifications, making them a significantly more economical choice compared to traditional concrete construction.
Beyond financial accessibility, the speed of construction is a primary factor attracting residents to this solution. Based on field reports, including the experience of local resident Ayman al-Sharaa, these units can be fully prepared and delivered within a remarkably short timeframe, often taking between one week and ten days. Al-Sharaa added that these homes provide a suitable living environment that accounts for local weather conditions, offering warmth during the winter months and maintaining coolness throughout the summer, which enhances their suitability for daily life.
The demographic of those utilizing these housing solutions is varied. Demand comes from a wide range of individuals, including donors who are working to provide housing for families in need, as well as families looking to set up private homes for their children as they prepare for marriage, viewing it as a fast and efficient alternative.
Despite the clear advantages of lower costs and rapid completion, the success of this housing model remains dependent on access to suitable land, the availability of basic services, and the presence of necessary infrastructure at the site.
