Joe Wilson: Syrian Stability and Prosperity Benefit the Entire Region

U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson has emphasized the strategic importance of achieving stability and prosperity in Syria, asserting that the country’s success in this current phase will have a positive impact on all nations across the Middle East.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Wilson noted that the period following the liberation of Syria in December 2024 has provided a genuine opportunity for state-building and economic development. He expressed his appreciation for the current trends that are enabling Syria to focus on reconstruction efforts.

Regarding Syria’s security and sovereignty, Wilson issued a clear call for an end to Israeli military strikes targeting Syrian territory, emphasizing that such attacks should not continue.

Wilson also addressed the state of U.S.-Turkish relations, characterizing the partnership as deep and robust. He highlighted that collaborative efforts between Washington and Ankara strengthen the concept of peace through strength. In this context, he voiced his support for the sale of U.S. F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, viewing the transaction as being in the best interest of both allies and as a means to solidify a partnership founded on mutual benefit.

Reflecting on the shifts that have taken place in Syria since the collapse of the previous regime, Wilson noted that these developments have led to the withdrawal of Iranian forces and the elimination of the Islamic State (ISIS). Furthermore, he pointed to the large-scale return of Syrians to their homes, with the number of returnees exceeding 3.5 million people. This massive movement of people has been described as one of the most significant repatriation operations of the 21st century.
