Iraq Launches Regional Initiative for Energy and Transport Integration

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi has launched an ambitious regional initiative aimed at achieving comprehensive integration of energy networks, railways, transport systems, and digital communications among Islamic nations. The announcement was made during the opening of the 52nd session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, held in Baghdad on October 17–18.
In his opening address, Prime Minister Al-Zaidi emphasized the necessity of joint action to secure trade routes and ensure the seamless flow of goods across international corridors. He clarified that the initiative extends beyond physical infrastructure to include the development of digital payment systems and commercial platforms. Furthermore, the plan aims to strengthen integration between industrial zones within member states to bolster economic prosperity.
Al-Zaidi noted that these strategic steps are designed to support regional stability and enhance the collective capacity of participating nations to navigate accelerating international crises and challenges. On the political front, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Iraq’s steadfast positions regarding regional issues, specifically reiterating support for the Palestinian cause. He underscored that securing the rights of the Palestinian people is a fundamental pillar for the stability and security of the entire region. Additionally, he called for the promotion of moderation and tolerance, the rejection of hate speech, and the intensification of diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace.
Iraq is currently hosting the 52nd session of the OIC, having formally assumed the presidency of the Council of Foreign Ministers from Turkey. The meetings have drawn broad participation, with representatives from 55 member and observer states attending to discuss enhancing joint Islamic action. The discussions focused on developing coordination mechanisms across vital sectors, particularly energy and communications, which serve as the backbone for economic growth in the region.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by participating countries to modernize their infrastructure and improve economic integration. Amid global challenges that necessitate international cooperation to secure supply chains, the development of robust digital and energy networks is viewed as essential. Such efforts are expected to improve the standing of these nations in the global economy and contribute to their sustainable development.
