Erdogan: Syrian People Achieve Historic Victory and Restore Stability

In a statement highlighting the regional focus on Syria’s evolving landscape, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared that the Syrian people achieved a “monumental” victory on December 8, 2024. He emphasized that this event represents a transformative turning point in the nation’s history, one that will remain a defining memory for future generations.

Speaking at a parliamentary meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Turkish President noted that Syria has effectively closed a difficult chapter characterized by 14 years of oppression and significant security challenges. Erdogan stated that the country is currently witnessing a tangible return to peace, calm, and stability. He praised the determination of the Syrian people to move forward in building a shared future under the leadership of President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, emphasizing the importance of national unity and solidarity.

Addressing the security and organizational aspects of the transition, Erdogan noted that a new chapter is unfolding in Syria as efforts continue toward integration in the north. He reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to supporting Syria throughout this critical transitional phase.

In a related context, the Turkish President stressed the necessity of holding accountable those responsible for crimes committed during the era of the former regime. He stated that the unfolding events in Syria provide profound lessons for autocrats. As part of this commitment to justice, he referenced the recent capture of Ali Kayali, widely known as “Meraj Ural,” who is considered one of the primary figures responsible for the 2013 Baniyas massacre. Erdogan underscored that “the cries of the oppressed do not go unheard.”

The Syrian General Intelligence Directorate announced last week that it successfully apprehended Meraj Ural as he attempted to flee across the border. This action has been characterized as part of broader efforts to hold individuals accountable for past violations and to ensure the stability of the new era currently being experienced by the country.
