Damascus University Bazaar Empowers Student Entrepreneurship

The Faculty of Economics at Damascus University has concluded a three-day bazaar designed to support student-led entrepreneurial projects. The event featured participation from approximately 100 students representing various faculties across the university.

The initiative aimed to provide a practical space for students to showcase their handicrafts and products, while fostering an entrepreneurial culture. By hosting this event, the university seeks to help students transform their creative ideas into sustainable and viable business ventures.

The bazaar showcased a wide array of offerings, including traditional Eastern cuisine, handmade crafts, wool products, and health-related goods. Beyond the promotional aspect, the event served as a critical field opportunity for students to engage directly with visitors and potential customers. This interaction allowed participants to gauge market demand and test the viability of their products against the actual needs of the public.

Ali Kanaan, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, emphasized that the university is committed to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) launched by students. He explained that the primary objective of the initiative is to empower young people to move beyond theoretical concepts and into the actual establishment of businesses. Through this process, students acquire essential experience in marketing and business management, which helps prepare them to launch their own private enterprises rather than relying solely on traditional employment after graduation.

Kanaan noted that the participation of students from diverse academic disciplines fostered a spirit of teamwork and enabled a productive exchange of expertise. The event provided a unique platform for entrepreneurs to introduce their work to a broader audience.

Participating student Sidra Nasr, who featured her artwork in the bazaar, highlighted that the event provided an excellent platform to showcase her talents and measure public interest in her products. Meanwhile, student Israa Najib stated that the event was a significant step in building a marketing presence for her project, emphasizing that direct communication with the student demographic is a fundamental pillar for the future development of their businesses.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the university to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application. By fostering an environment conducive to innovation, the university aims to integrate a wider segment of youth into economic activity while cultivating their skills in managing emerging projects.
