Syrian Initiatives Aim to Boost Media Responsibility and Combat Misinfo

The Syrian media landscape has seen intensified calls to bolster professional responsibility among journalists and content creators. These efforts come in response to the growing challenges posed by the spread of misinformation and its direct impact on civil peace and social stability.
Information verification experts have emphasized that countering misinformation requires a collaborative approach involving individuals, media institutions, and digital platforms to ensure a reliable and accurate information environment.
Ahmed Primo, director of an information verification platform, highlighted that the danger of unverified news extends beyond inaccuracy. He noted that such information can damage the social fabric and deepen divisions. Primo warned that the use of misleading information to target specific groups can fuel social tensions and incite violence. He stressed that responsibility starts with the individual, who must verify information before sharing it, and extends to institutions tasked with the duty of reporting the truth.
Majd Maghribia, a content creation trainer, pointed to the necessity of re-evaluating the motives behind information dissemination. He warned against content creators prioritizing ‘trends’ over accuracy and professionalism. Maghribia emphasized that freedom of expression must be coupled with ethical and legal responsibility. He urged creators to assess the potential impact of any post before circulation, particularly regarding sensitive political or religious issues. He cautioned that hasty publishing can lead to the marginalization of individuals or trigger social strife that goes beyond legal consequences.
These efforts are part of the ‘The Word Builds’ campaign, launched by the Syrian Media Academy in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Information and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The campaign aims to raise awareness regarding the risks of incitement and hate speech. It also provides practical tools for both the public and journalists to distinguish between verified information and misleading content.
Organizers of the campaign are focusing on fostering a culture of cross-referencing sources as a fundamental pillar for building societal awareness to protect civil peace. They emphasized that responsible media practice serves as the first line of defense against attempts to manipulate public opinion. Experts involved in the initiative hope that these efforts will contribute to crafting a more sober and professional national media discourse, thereby enhancing public trust in media outlets and shielding society from the negative repercussions of rumors that threaten its stability.
