Syrian-Canadian Diplomatic Talks Held in Damascus

A diplomatic meeting took place in Damascus on Wednesday between Saad Baroud, Director of the American Affairs Department at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and the Canadian Ambassador to Syria, Gregory Galligan. The discussions, held at the ministry’s headquarters, focused on enhancing joint efforts across political, economic, and developmental sectors, alongside an exchange of perspectives regarding current regional developments.

During the talks, the Syrian side commended Canada’s role in supporting international efforts related to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Baroud highlighted Canada’s participation as a member of the “Freedom Breath” international coalition. This coalition provides technical, logistical, and expert support to Syria, aimed at addressing issues and files associated with the legacy of chemical weapons.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed positive developments in the relationship between Syria and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Both parties noted Canada’s support for the resolution adopted by the IAEA Board of Governors last September, which lifted the finding of non-compliance previously held against Syria. This development was characterized as a significant step forward in resolving outstanding issues between the two sides. Both officials emphasized a shared interest in strengthening cooperation in the coming period to ensure the stability of technical and regulatory matters.
