Damascus Exhibition Showcases Career of Artist Majed Sabouni
The Zwaya Fine Arts Gallery in the Syrian capital, Damascus, has opened a special exhibition dedicated to the artist Majed Sabouni, celebrating a creative career that has spanned several decades. The exhibition serves as a retrospective, documenting the aesthetic and intellectual transformations that have defined Sabouni’s work and solidified his position as one of Syria’s most prominent fine artists.
The exhibition features 27 artworks created using the oil-based miniature printing technique. These pieces encapsulate the artist’s diverse experience, highlighting his distinct signature in both color composition and thematic structure. In a special statement, Sabouni explained that the selected works originate from different periods of his career, embodying the variety of schools and styles he has explored, ranging from abstraction and nature to human-centered social issues.
Describing his working methodology, Sabouni noted that for him, painting is a continuous journey of discovery rather than a process bound by pre-set plans. Instead, the painting takes shape gradually through the movement of the brush and the layering of colors, reaching its final form spontaneously. He emphasized that the passion for seeking the new remains the primary engine of his creativity.
Mohammad Subhi al-Sayed Yahya, head of the Syrian Fine Artists Union, praised Sabouni’s body of work, identifying him as a pillar of the pioneering generation that has left a tangible impact on the national art scene. He added that Sabouni’s work conveys an optimistic vision and reflects a spirit of renewal, noting that his long career has played a leading role in strengthening the presence of Syrian art and enriching its development.
Similarly, fine artist Adnan Hamida commended Sabouni’s artistic vision and his commitment to creative principles. He highlighted the boldness that has characterized Sabouni’s approach to addressing human concerns, including the experiences of displaced persons, and noted that his work effectively contributes to building bridges of artistic connection between generations.
Born in Hama in 1944 and a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus, Majed Sabouni maintains an active presence in the Syrian art scene. His work continues to demonstrate a skillful fusion of color and concept, underscoring his enduring commitment to innovation throughout his extensive career.
