Chicory Root Fiber Supports Gut Bacterial Balance, Study Finds

A recent scientific study published in the journal Microbiome Research Reports has highlighted the vital role that dietary fiber extracted from chicory roots plays in improving digestive health. The research, led by Evangelia N. Kerezoudis at Örebro University in Sweden, demonstrates the ability of these fibers to support the natural balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut.
The field study involved 55 healthy adults who participated in a clinical trial over a four-week period. During this time, participants consumed 500 milligrams of rhamnogalacturonan-1 fiber, which is extracted from chicory roots, on a daily basis. The results revealed a significant increase in the levels of beneficial Bifidobacterium in the gut, indicating a direct positive impact of these fibers on the intestinal environment.
Beyond the boost in beneficial bacteria, researchers observed changes in the byproducts of fiber fermentation within the gut. There was also an improvement in certain markers related to the immune response among the participants. The study further noted that rhamnogalacturonan-1 fiber may effectively contribute to strengthening the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Throughout the duration of the trial, researchers confirmed that participants demonstrated a high level of tolerance to the fiber.
In their conclusion, the researchers emphasized that these findings strongly support the potential for incorporating chicory root fiber as a functional food ingredient in daily diets to help maintain gut health. However, the study authors stressed the necessity for further scientific research to determine the long-term health effects of these fibers. They reaffirmed that the current results highlight the importance of plant-based fiber in promoting a balanced intestinal environment and overall human health.
