Investigation Committee Begins Inquiry into Death of Mohammed Ghamira
A specialized investigation committee, tasked with uncovering the circumstances behind the death of a young man, Mohammed Ghamira, officially commenced its work in the coastal governorate of Latakia on Monday. The formation of the committee follows a direct mandate from the Syrian Minister of Interior, Anas Khattab, who has underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in the proceedings.
The committee is being led by the Assistant Minister of Interior for Police Affairs, Major General Ahmed Latouf. The team includes the Minister’s advisor for legal affairs and human rights, Brigadier Samer Al-Hussein; the Director of the Department of Disciplinary Affairs and Prosecutions, Brigadier Muaz Al-Jamal; and the Director of the Criminal Security Department, Brigadier Hussein Al-Hammadi. The group has been tasked with establishing the facts surrounding the incident with precision.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Interior, spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba issued a statement emphasizing that the rights of citizens and the value of human life are paramount to the ministry. He stated that the ministry will not tolerate any negligence or misconduct. According to al-Baba, the ministry is committed to ensuring that legal measures are applied against any individual found responsible for violations or failures to fulfill their professional duties, regardless of their position or rank. This approach is intended to uphold the rule of law and provide the family of the deceased with the full truth regarding his passing.
In addition to the investigative committee, the Internal Security Command in Latakia announced on Sunday that seven individuals who were present in the detention area of the Al-Haffa police station during the time of Ghamira’s detention have been apprehended. These individuals are currently being held as part of the ongoing investigation to assist officials in piecing together the timeline and events leading up to the death.
Minister Khattab has expressed his personal condolences to the family of the deceased, reiterating his commitment to accountability. He noted that any illegal actions or breaches of conduct by Ministry of Interior personnel will be dealt with firmly in accordance with established legal procedures. The Minister reaffirmed that those found to be at fault will face appropriate judicial consequences once the investigations have concluded.
As the inquiry proceeds, the focus remains on the findings of the committee, which is expected to provide a comprehensive account of the events that occurred in the Al-Haffa police station.
