Syria Participates in IRENA Council Meetings for First Time

Syria has participated for the first time in the meetings of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) since becoming a member. The participation took place during the 32nd session of the agency’s council, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Syrian delegation was led by the Director General of the National Energy Research Center, Khaled Sheikh Hammoud. During the session, the delegation engaged in comprehensive discussions regarding the future of the energy sector and the agency’s strategic priorities.
This participation aligns with Syria’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with international organizations specializing in energy. The objective is to leverage modern expertise and technologies to support the upcoming reconstruction phase in Syria. The council meetings provided a platform to review the agency’s key activities and identify shared priorities, which primarily focus on developing national energy policies, building technical capacity for personnel in this vital sector, and providing the necessary technical and institutional support for energy infrastructure development.
In addition to the main sessions, the Syrian delegation held sideline meetings with IRENA officials to explore potential cooperation aimed at advancing the renewable energy sector in Syria. Key topics of discussion included the development of a comprehensive energy transition roadmap, the identification of available renewable energy potential, and the development of a portfolio of projects prepared for investment and financing. These elements are considered essential pillars for a reconstruction strategy that requires sustainable and reliable energy.
The discussions also emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise and transferring modern, globally utilized renewable energy technologies to Syria. These efforts are aimed at enhancing the skills of the national workforce, enabling them to manage future projects with professional and scientific rigor. This step reflects the commitment of the National Energy Research Center to integrate Syria into the international sustainable energy system.
The 32nd session of the IRENA Council, which began on the 15th of this month in Abu Dhabi, saw a broad turnout of over 300 government representatives and agency delegates. The session was dedicated to discussing global challenges within the energy sector and coordinating joint efforts among member states to reach renewable energy solutions that serve economic and environmental development goals for the coming phase.
