Syria Participates in IRENA Council Meetings for First Time

Syria participated in the 32nd meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held in Abu Dhabi, marking the nation’s first such involvement since joining the organization. The Syrian delegation was led by the Director General of the National Energy Research Center, Khaled Sheikh Hammoud, who participated in extensive discussions regarding the future of the energy sector and the agency’s strategic direction.

This engagement is part of a broader Syrian initiative to strengthen cooperation with specialized international energy organizations. The objective is to leverage modern expertise and technologies to support upcoming reconstruction efforts in Syria. The meetings included a comprehensive review of the agency’s primary activities and the establishment of shared priorities, which center on the development of national energy policies, capacity building for local technical teams, and the provision of technical and institutional support to advance energy infrastructure.

Throughout the side meetings and events, the Syrian delegation explored potential avenues for cooperation with IRENA officials aimed at developing the renewable energy sector in the country. Key topics of discussion included the development of an integrated roadmap for the energy transition, the identification of available renewable energy potential, and the creation of a portfolio of projects ready for investment and financing. These efforts are viewed as a fundamental pillar of the country’s reconstruction strategy, which requires sustainable and reliable energy sources.

Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the importance of knowledge exchange and the transfer of modern, globally utilized renewable energy technologies to Syria. The initiative is intended to enhance the efficiency of national personnel, empowering them to manage future projects in a professional and scientific manner. This step reflects the National Energy Research Center’s ongoing efforts to integrate Syria into the international sustainable energy system.

The 32nd session of the IRENA Council, which commenced on the 15th of this month in Abu Dhabi, hosted more than 300 government representatives and agency delegates. The session was dedicated to addressing global challenges in the energy sector and coordinating efforts among member states to achieve renewable energy solutions that serve the economic and environmental development goals of the coming phase.
