Khalil Al-Neimi Signs New Novel ‘In Praise of Escape’ in Damascus

Al-Rawda Cafe in the Syrian capital, Damascus, hosted a book signing event on Tuesday evening for the latest novel by Syrian author Khalil Al-Neimi, titled ‘In Praise of Escape.’ The event drew a distinguished audience of intellectuals and readers interested in literature, providing a platform for direct engagement with the author regarding the intellectual and artistic inquiries posed by his latest work.
The novel delves into a pivotal era of Syrian history, specifically the late 1960s around the time of the June setback. The narrative centers on the experience of a Syrian physician called up for mandatory military service in the occupied Golan Heights. Through this lens, the work examines the internal struggles of its characters, exploring the contradictions and questions they face regarding concepts of freedom, submission, and rebellion within the political and social conditions that defined that period.
During the event, Al-Neimi noted that ‘In Praise of Escape’ evokes facets of the political and intellectual transformations witnessed in Syria during that era, including the manifestations of repression and their impact on the individual. The author explained that the artistic structure of his novel does not rely on a traditional, linear plot. Instead, it is anchored by language as a fundamental element that drives the narrative, weaving together interchanging times, places, and characters to lend the text meditative depth.
Al-Neimi emphasized that his vision for writing stems from a belief in the necessity for individuals to critique the pain they experience. He views literary text as a vital tool for expressing opinions and questioning daily life and society. The novel transcends the concept of ‘escape’ as a mere physical act of relocating from one place to another, transforming it into a philosophical and psychological inquiry that touches upon the human relationship with authority, memory, and identity, as well as the capacity to confront the constraints imposed by circumstances on dignity and freedom.
The novel was published in 2026 by Ninawa for Studies, Publishing and Distribution in Damascus. It is part of Al-Neimi’s broader narrative project, which blends personal experience with intellectual fiction. Khalil Al-Neimi, a surgeon and novelist residing in Paris, has a significant literary career focusing on human and existential issues. His notable works include ‘The Man Who Eats Himself,’ ‘The Emptying of the Being,’ ‘Damascus 67,’ and ‘Cotton Blossom.’
The signing event served as an opportunity for the Damascus reading public to interact with the author and explore the dimensions of his literary project, underscoring the role of cultural events in fostering dialogue about Syrian literature and its contemporary and future concerns.
