Chicory Root Fiber Supports Gut Bacterial Balance, Study Finds

A recent scientific study published in the journal ‘Microbiome Research Reports’ has highlighted the vital role that dietary fiber extracted from chicory roots plays in improving digestive health. The research, led by Evangelia N. Kerezoudi at Örebro University in Sweden, indicates that these specific fibers have the capacity to support the natural balance of beneficial bacteria within the human gut.
The field study involved 55 healthy adults who participated in a clinical trial over a period of four consecutive weeks. The participants were administered 500 milligrams of ‘rhamnogalacturonan-1′ fiber, derived from chicory roots, on a daily basis. The findings revealed a significant increase in the levels of Bifidobacterium, a beneficial gut bacterium, demonstrating a direct positive impact of the fiber on the intestinal environment.
In addition to boosting the levels of beneficial bacteria, researchers observed notable changes in how the fiber is fermented within the gut. The study also recorded improvements in several indicators associated with the participants’ immune responses. Furthermore, the findings suggest that rhamnogalacturonan-1 fiber may effectively contribute to strengthening the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Throughout the trial, the results confirmed that the participants exhibited a high level of tolerance to the fiber.
Concluding their research, the scientists emphasized that the data strongly supports the potential for incorporating chicory root fiber as a functional food ingredient in a daily diet to help maintain overall gut health. However, the study authors underscored the necessity of conducting further scientific research to determine the long-term health effects of this fiber. Ultimately, the results underscore the importance of plant-based fibers in promoting a balanced intestinal environment and overall human health.
