Chicory Root Fiber Supports Gut Bacterial Balance, Study Finds

A recent scientific study published in the journal Microbiome Research Reports has highlighted the vital role that dietary fiber extracted from chicory roots plays in improving digestive health. The research, led by Evangelia N. Kerezoudi at Örebro University in Sweden, underscores the fiber’s capacity to support the natural balance of beneficial bacteria within the gut.

The clinical study involved 55 healthy adults who participated in a four-week trial. During this period, participants were administered a daily dose of 500 milligrams of rhamnogalacturonan-1 fiber, which is derived from chicory roots. The results revealed a significant increase in the levels of Bifidobacterium, a type of beneficial gut bacteria, indicating a direct positive impact on the intestinal environment.

In addition to the boost in healthy bacterial levels, researchers observed notable changes in the fermentation byproducts of the fiber within the gut. The study also noted improvements in certain markers associated with the immune response of the participants. Furthermore, findings suggest that rhamnogalacturonan-1 fiber may effectively contribute to strengthening the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Throughout the duration of the clinical trial, participants demonstrated good tolerance to the fiber, reporting no significant issues.

Concluding their findings, the research team emphasized that the data strongly supports the potential for incorporating chicory root fiber as a functional food ingredient in daily diets to help maintain gut health. However, the authors stressed the necessity for further scientific research to determine the long-term health effects of this fiber. Ultimately, the study highlights the broader importance of plant-based fibers in fostering a balanced intestinal environment and promoting overall human health.
