Tartus Hosts ‘Academic Destination 2’ to Guide High School Students
The Student Union in Tartus, in collaboration with the provincial Youth Affairs department, has launched a two-day educational event titled ‘Academic Destination 2.’ The initiative aims to provide guidance to high school graduates, helping them navigate the process of choosing their future university specializations with a more informed perspective.
Building on the success of its inaugural edition held last year, the program kicked off this year in the city of Baniyas before transitioning to Tartus. The event is designed to offer students a comprehensive overview of the various faculties and academic disciplines available across Syria, while providing tools to help them align these paths with their personal interests, aptitudes, and career goals.
This year’s event introduced significant technological upgrades, most notably the integration of artificial intelligence through an interactive 3D, voice-supported model. This system allows students to pose questions regarding specific majors and express concerns about their academic trajectories. In response, the AI analyzes the students’ stated interests and provides tailored guidance toward the most suitable specializations.
Dr. Mahdi Ali, head of the Tartus Student Union, emphasized that the primary goal is to empower students to make informed decisions regarding their educational futures. He noted that the union has set up dedicated stations featuring representatives from various university faculties. These representatives provide detailed information on curricula, study requirements, and potential career paths. Additionally, the event features a series of lectures, seminars, and workshops.
Reem Abdul Hadi, the event supervisor representing Youth Affairs, highlighted the practical components of the program. The event included real-world simulations, such as first-aid training exercises associated with the Faculty of Medicine, agricultural experiments linked to the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, and dedicated information booths for nursing and language programs. The event also included an awards ceremony honoring the top-performing student in the Tartus secondary school examinations, as well as panel discussions featuring the President of Tartus University, Dr. Adib Barhoum.
During his participation, Dr. Barhoum underscored the importance of connecting academic choices with a student’s personal passions. He noted that creativity and innovation are closely tied to how much a student values their chosen field. He further expressed his optimism regarding the vital role these students will play in the country’s future.
This initiative is part of a broader series of events held across multiple Syrian provinces, including Damascus, Aleppo, Idlib, Homs, Latakia, and Hama. These efforts seek to create an interactive environment that supports students during the critical transition from secondary education to university, enabling them to make decisions based on knowledge and prior insight.
