Upgrade Works Begin at Aleppo’s Al-Ra’i Border Crossing

The Syrian General Authority for Borders and Customs began a series of rehabilitation and expansion works at the Al-Ra’i border crossing with Turkey, located in Aleppo Governorate, on Wednesday. The project is part of a national strategy aimed at upgrading border infrastructure and enhancing the capacity to handle heavy truck traffic.

This initiative is designed to organize and facilitate transportation and commercial exchange at the crossing while reducing the traffic congestion frequently observed in the border areas. Uday Al-Obeid, Head of Public Relations at the crossing, explained that the project is part of a comprehensive development plan encompassing several vital aspects. These include expanding commercial freight yards, modifying the main gate to ensure greater flexibility for crossing operations, and repaving main roads.

The development plan also includes significant technical and service-oriented improvements. Plans include the expansion of sewage networks and the installation of fiber-optic cables, which will lay the groundwork for the digitization of procedures at the crossing. Looking ahead to the start of next year, the project will also feature the construction of dedicated maintenance facilities and a specialized security inspection unit, which are expected to further enhance operational efficiency.

Engineer Ahmed Al-Mando, who is responsible for facilities and maintenance, noted that work is currently underway in the second phase of the project. This phase began with the removal of old asphalt layers and excavation work in preparation for concrete pouring. Al-Mando emphasized that these measures follow the completion of the first phase of maintenance, which helped streamline traveler movement and stimulate trade. He described the crossing as a strategic economic gateway for the governorate.

These activities are part of ongoing government efforts in Aleppo to rehabilitate vital facilities and infrastructure. Throughout July and August, the governorate launched a package of maintenance projects for service facilities across various sectors. These efforts are intended to support economic activity and provide the necessary facilities for transport and transit operations, which serve as the backbone of trade in the region.
