Syria and IAEA Sign Country Programme Framework for 2026-2031

The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have officially signed a Country Programme Framework (CPF) covering the period from 2026 to 2031. The signing ceremony took place at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

The Syrian delegation was represented by Dr. Mudar Al-Akla, head of the Atomic Energy Commission, while the IAEA was represented by Hua Liu, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation.

This agreement serves as the foundational reference framework for medium-term planning regarding technical and developmental cooperation between Syria and the IAEA. The framework is designed to identify national priority areas that will receive resources for technical cooperation and the transfer of nuclear technology. These efforts aim to support Syria’s national development goals, building upon a partnership that has been in place since Syria joined the agency as a member state in 1963.

The agreement outlines seven key areas of focus for the next six years, including nuclear and radiological safety, health and nutrition, food and agriculture, energy planning, nuclear knowledge management, industrial applications, as well as the water and environment sectors. This initiative aligns with Syria’s efforts to strengthen the peaceful applications of nuclear and radiological technology and to utilize them effectively across the country’s service, development, and research sectors.

Syria’s Atomic Energy Commission is currently participating in the 70th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, alongside delegations from 182 other nations. The conference, which commenced on Monday, is scheduled to continue until September 18th.
