Salhiya Al-Bukamal Water Station Halted Due to Rising Euphrates Levels
Technical teams in Deir ez-Zor Governorate have taken urgent preventative measures by suspending the operations of the Salhiya Al-Bukamal water station. This proactive step was initiated in response to the rising water levels of the Euphrates River.
Management in the Al-Bukamal region reported that the decision was necessary as the river water began approaching the station’s lift engines. To ensure the safety of the infrastructure and prevent potential damage, crews have dismantled vital equipment and engines, relocating them to secure sites. Operations at the station will remain suspended until conditions normalize and the facility can safely resume its regular service.
This action is part of a broader set of emergency measures implemented by the Emergency Response Committee and various service providers in Deir ez-Zor. These efforts are focused on safeguarding critical infrastructure and public service institutions along the banks of the Euphrates, with the primary goal of preventing direct failures in water equipment that the residents of the eastern countryside rely upon for drinking water and irrigation.
In recent times, Deir ez-Zor has experienced a continuous increase in the water levels of the Euphrates, leading to higher water flows toward the riverbanks. The impact of this rise has extended beyond the Salhiya Al-Bukamal station. On Saturday, the rising water levels led to the flooding of agricultural lands in the Baghiliya area on the outskirts of Deir ez-Zor city. Additionally, the Al-Janaynah station, located on the opposite bank, has suffered partial flooding.
Technical teams and relevant committees within the governorate continue to monitor river levels closely. They are actively implementing all necessary measures to mitigate the negative impacts of this natural phenomenon on both service and agricultural sectors, aiming to ensure the continuity of vital services for citizens and to minimize losses to public facilities situated near the riverbed.
