Repairs Begin on Electricity Line Feeding Shahba and As-Suwayda
Maintenance crews from the As-Suwayda Electricity Company began work on Friday to repair the primary power line supplying the city of Shahba, its surrounding villages, and several districts within the city of As-Suwayda. The line had been severed due to acts carried out by outlaw groups, leading to a ten-day power outage that disrupted essential services and negatively impacted the daily lives of residents.
The As-Suwayda Governorate announced via its official Telegram channel that the repair operations are being conducted in the western countryside. The work is being carried out with field coordination from Internal Security Forces and support from volunteers of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent to ensure the rapid completion of repairs and the restoration of electricity to the affected areas as soon as possible. This initiative follows directives from the Governor of As-Suwayda, Mustafa Al-Bakour, who emphasized the priority of restoring damaged public infrastructure to alleviate the burden on citizens.
Governor Al-Bakour explained that this effort is part of a broader “trust-building” initiative, translating the practical results of negotiations held by a committee tasked with facilitating the return of displaced residents to their villages. The Governor stated that the rehabilitation of electrical infrastructure is primarily aimed at creating the necessary service conditions for citizens to return to their homes and achieve stability. He stressed that public services are a fundamental right for all citizens and that protecting them is a shared responsibility, requiring the rejection of any encroachments that harm vital facilities.
These efforts coincide with a period of expanded service-related initiatives in the province. The Governor recently chaired a meeting with directors of service departments, union representatives, and local committees to discuss ways to address economic and service-related challenges in the region. This operation is one of several measures recently taken by the governorate to improve distribution networks, including the provision of new transformers to the electricity company to ensure service stability. These actions follow security incidents in the western countryside of As-Suwayda on August 31, which resulted in injuries to several members of the Internal Security Forces while they were confronting attacks by outlaw groups.
