Finance Minister Discusses Debt and Development with Abu Dhabi Fund
Syria’s Minister of Finance, Mohammad Yassar Bernieh, held a virtual meeting with a team from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). The meeting, conducted via video conference, marks a step toward reactivating communication channels with development partners and reflects the growing positive relations between Syria and the United Arab Emirates. The Ministry of Finance stated that this engagement signals the beginning of a new phase of joint cooperation after a hiatus of more than 14 years.
The discussions primarily centered on the issue of indebtedness. Both parties agreed to activate a joint financial and technical committee tasked with reconciling debt figures. During the meeting, Minister Bernieh emphasized the Syrian government’s commitment to honoring its financial obligations. He presented an initiative aimed at addressing the debt file through a friendly and constructive approach, designed to overcome obstacles and transform current economic challenges into promising investment opportunities that support the Syrian economy during its recovery phase.
The talks also explored prospects for development cooperation, with both sides expressing their anticipation for a visit by an ADFD delegation to Syria in the near future. The forthcoming visit is intended to identify ways to implement vital development projects and activate agreements that had been suspended during the previous period. These efforts are expected to strengthen the Fund’s role in supporting reconstruction and the country’s economic recovery path.
