Damascus Hosts International Referee Classification Course for Fencing
The Syrian Arab Fencing Federation, in collaboration with the West Asian Fencing Federation and the Syrian Ministry of Sports and Youth, is currently hosting an intensive evaluation and classification course for national fencing referees in Damascus. The program, which aims to elevate the standard of officiating in the country, is being led by international lecturer and referee Alaa Al-Rawi.
The initiative serves as a strategic effort to modernize the local approach to competitive fencing. By integrating international best practices, the federation seeks to ensure that Syrian officials are well-versed in the latest global regulations and capable of managing high-stakes matches with precision. The curriculum combines rigorous theoretical study with practical applications, including simulated match scenarios that allow participants to refine their decision-making skills under pressure.
Yahya Al-Zein, President of the Syrian Arab Fencing Federation, highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it represents the first time a classification program has been conducted under this specific structure. He emphasized that the collaboration with a highly regarded international referee like Al-Rawi is a critical step in professionalizing the domestic officiating pool. According to Al-Zein, the ultimate goal of the training is to prepare Syrian referees to successfully navigate external international licensing examinations, thereby expanding the nation’s presence in global fencing events.
The course is set to conclude with a series of final assessments. These examinations are designed to mirror the standards set by the International Fencing Federation (FIE), ensuring that the participants not only master the technical aspects of the sport’s rulebook but also demonstrate the ability to apply those rules accurately in real-time competitive situations. The training modules focus heavily on analyzing complex technical disputes and managing the pace and atmosphere of championship-level bouts.
