Cultural Festival Revives Community Spirit in Homs’ Al-Qaryatayn
The Arab Cultural Center in Al-Qaryatayn, located in the Homs countryside, recently opened its doors to host the ‘Syria Summer’ festival. This initiative, organized by the Homs Directorate of Culture in collaboration with the Charitable Cooperation Foundation for Care and Development, highlights a concerted effort to restore cultural and social vitality to the region. The festival has drawn significant participation from residents of Al-Qaryatayn and neighboring towns, including Sadad, Mahin, and Huwarin, serving as a platform to showcase local heritage and environmental products.
The inaugural day of the event featured an exhibition of handmade goods and traditional crafts, reflecting the unique identity of the area. Displays included textiles, embroidery, and various garments, alongside selections of local produce, home-cooked food, and artistic creations. The choice of the Arab Cultural Center as the venue carries symbolic weight; organizers aimed to re-establish the facility as a central beacon for cultural activity in the district, despite the physical damage sustained by the structure in years past.
Luoay Al-Qaed, Executive Director of the Charitable Cooperation Foundation, emphasized that hosting the festival within the center serves as a powerful message: that infrastructure damage does not preclude the revival of social and community life. To support local artisans and producers, the foundation provided free space for them to display their work. Additionally, a dedicated section for Bedouin heritage was included to highlight and preserve the region’s folk traditions. The festival has also integrated the efforts of volunteer teams, charitable organizations, and local business entities.
The younger generation played a prominent role in the proceedings, with students from the Al-Qaryatayn Industrial High School showcasing handmade items. Their contributions, ranging from sewing projects to knitting, underscored a focus on encouraging youth to hone their vocational skills while safeguarding historical handicrafts. Participants like Hanan Hanhoun from the nearby town of Sadad noted that the event acts as a vital bridge, bringing people from different communities together under one roof and fostering stronger social ties.
The ‘Syria Summer’ festival is part of a broader series of cultural initiatives being implemented across various Syrian provinces. By blending elements of art, local heritage, and interactive community activities, these events aim to energize the cultural landscape during the summer months. As the festival continues, organizers are preparing further activities, including the setup of a traditional Bedouin tent designed to provide live demonstrations of the area’s rich folk legacy.
