Homs Eco-Market Showcases Art Made from Recycled Waste

Homs hosted a market dedicated to eco-friendly products as part of the activities marking National Environment Day for 2026. Held at the Culture Directorate hall, the event showcased local initiatives that have successfully transformed waste and used materials into functional handicrafts and works of art. This activity was organized as part of the Environment Directorate’s ongoing efforts to raise environmental awareness, encourage recycling, and reduce waste.
Running under the theme “From Our Environment, For Our Environment,” the initiative aims to educate the community about the benefits of eco-friendly products through interactive engagement. Additionally, the market provides a vital platform for civil society associations and special education institutes to display their creative outputs.
Lara Gawi of the Homs Environment Directorate explained that the market is part of a broader series of activities, which include tree-planting campaigns and community cleaning initiatives. Gawi emphasized the importance of these events in providing a practical model for the benefits of reuse in daily life.
Fadia Hanna, representing the Special Education Institute for Intellectual Disabilities under the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor, noted that the items on display were the result of collective efforts by participants, including individuals with intellectual and hearing disabilities, as well as those with cerebral palsy. According to Hanna, the students successfully repurposed available materials—such as food scraps, stones, wooden sticks, and plastic—into artistic pieces and useful household tools. This process has served to bolster the students’ innovation skills and productive capabilities.
The event saw significant engagement from the public. Visitor Nagham Ahmed expressed her appreciation for the quality of the work showcased and highlighted the importance of supporting such initiatives, which encourage the replacement of traditional plastic products with innovative, eco-friendly alternatives.
National Environment Day is observed annually on November 1st. It serves as an occasion to promote social responsibility toward the protection of natural resources, the expansion of green spaces, and the coordination of efforts between institutions and individuals to ensure a clean and sustainable environment.
