Chicory Root Fiber Supports Gut Bacterial Balance, Study Finds

A recent scientific study published in the journal Microbiome Research Reports highlights the vital role that dietary fiber extracted from chicory roots plays in improving digestive health. The research, led by Evangelia N. Kerezoudis at Örebro University in Sweden, underscores the fiber’s capacity to support the natural balance of beneficial bacteria within the human gut.

The clinical trial involved 55 healthy adults who consumed 500 milligrams of rhamnogalacturonan-1 fiber, extracted from chicory roots, daily for four consecutive weeks. The findings revealed a notable increase in the levels of beneficial Bifidobacterium in the participants’ digestive systems, demonstrating a direct positive impact on the intestinal environment.

Beyond the increase in beneficial bacteria, researchers observed significant changes in the metabolic byproducts of fiber fermentation within the gut. Furthermore, participants showed improvements in several markers associated with immune response. The study also indicated that rhamnogalacturonan-1 fiber may contribute effectively to strengthening the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Throughout the duration of the clinical trial, participants reportedly showed good tolerance to the fiber, indicating its suitability for regular consumption.

In their concluding remarks, the researchers stated that the data strongly support the potential of incorporating chicory root fiber as a functional food ingredient in daily diets to help maintain gut health. However, the study authors emphasized the necessity for further scientific research to determine the long-term health effects of this fiber. They concluded that these findings highlight the significant importance of plant-based fibers in promoting a balanced intestinal environment and overall human health.
