Erdogan: Syrian People Achieve Historic Victory and Restore Stability

In remarks reflecting the regional focus on Syrian developments, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan affirmed that the Syrian people achieved what he described as a “massive” victory on December 8, 2024. He emphasized that this event will be remembered by future generations as a pivotal turning point in the country’s history.
During an address at a parliamentary meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Turkish President noted that Syria has turned the page on approximately 14 years of repression and security challenges. Erdogan stated that the nation is currently witnessing a tangible return to peace, calm, and stability. He praised the Syrian people’s ability to move forward in building their common future under the leadership of President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, within a framework of national unity and solidarity.
Erdogan also addressed the security and organizational aspects of the transition, pointing out that a new chapter is opening in Syria with the progress being made in the integration process in the north. He reiterated Turkey’s commitment to standing by Syria during this important transitional phase.
In a related context, the Turkish President stressed the importance of holding those responsible for crimes committed during the former regime’s era to account, emphasizing that current events in Syria carry profound lessons for tyrants. Regarding this, he highlighted the arrest of the individual known as Ali Kayali, also referred to as “Miqdad Oral,” who is considered one of the primary figures responsible for the 2013 Baniyas massacre. He affirmed that the “cries of the oppressed do not go unheard.”
The Syrian General Intelligence Directorate announced last week that it had successfully apprehended Miqdad Oral as he attempted to flee across the border. This step was described as part of efforts to ensure accountability for those involved in past violations and to secure the stability of the new phase the country is experiencing.
