Specialist Teams Survey Mysterious Vapors in Hasakah’s Jabal Kawkab

Specialist teams conducted intensive field operations in Al-Hasakah Governorate on Wednesday, following reports of mysterious vapors rising from the vicinity of Jabal Kawkab in recent days. The site visit is part of an ongoing government effort to evaluate the geological and security situation in the area.
The field survey involved coordinated efforts from the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management, the National Center for Seismology, and the General Establishment for Geology. The joint teams are tasked with collecting precise data, conducting necessary technical inspections at the locations where the vapors were observed, and examining ground cracks that have appeared in the surrounding area.
Abdul Halim Shehab, Director of the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate in Al-Hasakah, confirmed that the specialist teams have concluded their field surveys across all relevant sites. He noted that the operation included the documentation of field data and an initial analysis of the nature of the phenomenon. Shehab stated that the competent authorities will now study these findings and data in depth. Once this process is complete, the nature and causes of the phenomenon will be announced in a transparent and formal manner.
Investigations into the site are being treated with special attention, given the geographic significance and historical context of Jabal Kawkab. The mountain is a prominent geological landmark in the region, rising approximately 516 meters above sea level and spanning a diameter of one kilometer. It is located about 15 kilometers east of the center of Al-Hasakah city.
The site also holds additional significance due to the presence of former military structures and formations in its vicinity. This has prompted the committees to meticulously examine the nature of the phenomenon to ensure the safety of the area and to determine the underlying causes—whether they are natural geological occurrences or related to other factors.
Local residents in Al-Hasakah are awaiting the release of the final report from the relevant authorities, which is expected to address ongoing speculations regarding the cause of the vapors and determine any necessary measures based on confirmed scientific and geological evaluations.
