Tartus Water Resources Clears Drainage Networks Ahead of Rainy Season

As part of proactive preparations for the upcoming rainy season, the Water Resources Directorate in Tartus has completed extensive clearing operations across approximately 3 kilometers of drainage channels in the Akkar Plain. This initiative is part of the directorate’s routine measures to ensure the efficiency of the water drainage network and mitigate the risk of water accumulation that could lead to the flooding of local agricultural land.

Providing details on the project, the Director of Water Resources in Tartus, Engineer Mohammed Mahrez, stated that technical teams focused their efforts on two primary axes. The MJD6-2 drainage channel, which spans 1.5 kilometers through the Al-Hawza, Beit Shoufan, and Samryan areas, was cleared of debris. Simultaneously, the MD6 channel underwent similar maintenance, covering an equal distance of 1.5 kilometers.

Mahrez noted that these operations are essential for enhancing water flow within the network, significantly reducing the likelihood of blockages caused by the accumulation of dirt, silt, and vegetation that often occurs during the summer months.

These activities form part of a comprehensive package of preventative measures implemented by the directorate to boost the readiness of drainage and waterway networks ahead of winter. Such efforts are designed to safeguard agricultural crops, as well as public and private property, from the potential damage caused by heavy rainfall. The directorate continues to prioritize the maintenance of water infrastructure to ensure its operational effectiveness under varying weather conditions.

The Tartus Water Resources Directorate previously conducted similar preventative maintenance on several riverbeds within the Tel Al-Housh network sectors. These measures align with the Ministry’s broader strategy to enhance the preparedness and operational efficiency of irrigation and water drainage systems. By maintaining these networks, the directorate aims to support the agricultural sector—a fundamental pillar of the regional economy—and provide protection against floods and torrents that may result from winter weather depressions.
