Daraa Water Resources Resumes Clearing of Wadi Sanin

The Water Resources Directorate in Daraa Governorate has resumed operations to clear the Wadi Sanin watercourse in the city of Nawa, located in the western countryside. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and environmental standards in the region.

The project, which spans approximately seven kilometers, aims to prevent the accumulation of sewage and the overflow of wastewater into surrounding agricultural lands. By addressing these blockages, the Directorate seeks to mitigate the immediate health and environmental risks posed by stagnant water pools.

Abdul Khallaq Al-Jahmani, a health inspector with the Directorate, stated that the work is focused on preventing the overflow of sewage into residential areas and farmland in and around Nawa. He noted that these measures are essential to curbing the spread of insects and waterborne diseases associated with stagnant water. Al-Jahmani estimated that the work will take approximately 20 days to complete, with the exact timeline dependent on the volume of blockages found within the stream’s path.

Furthermore, Al-Jahmani emphasized that the Directorate remains committed to its broader plan of clearing watercourses throughout Daraa Governorate. The objective is to improve the efficiency of rainwater management and ensure that stormwater does not mix with sewage waste.

Local residents of Nawa have welcomed the intervention. Resident Ahmed Al-Hassan pointed out that the flow of mixed sewage and water into the Sanin stream, which eventually reaches the Adwan Dam, has long posed a significant health and environmental threat. Al-Hassan added that these efforts by the Water Resources Directorate are crucial for protecting agricultural land and ensuring the safety of local crop production.

Wadi Sanin is considered a strategic watercourse within the Yarmouk Basin, primarily due to its role in supplying water to the Adwan Dam reservoir. This current project follows previous maintenance work completed by the Directorate in mid-August, which involved rehabilitating and clearing a 1,500-meter section of the same watercourse, with an average width of 40 meters. This work is part of a recurring strategy employed by the Directorate to maintain the integrity of water channels across the governorate.
