Syria’s UN Mission Hosts Symposium on ‘Syria Without Camps’ Vision
The Permanent Mission of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations organized a high-level symposium on Wednesday titled “Regional Stability, Security, and Sustainable Return: The Imperative of a Syria Without Camps.” The event was held as part of ongoing Syrian diplomatic efforts to present a national vision aimed at ending displacement and ensuring the sustainable return of Syrian citizens to their original areas.
The symposium featured broad participation from prominent international and UN leaders. Attendees included representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The high-level Syrian delegation participating in the event was headed by Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed Al-Saleh, Permanent Representative of Syria to the UN Ibrahim Al-Alabi, and Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Qutaiba Qadish.
Discussions during the symposium focused on the importance of linking the “Syria Without Camps” vision with national recovery priorities. Participants emphasized the necessity of coordinating international and local efforts to support projects for the reconstruction of local communities. They highlighted that this vision serves as a fundamental pillar, not only for ensuring a dignified life for displaced Syrians within the country but also as a vital element in enhancing regional stability.
During the sessions, the Syrian delegation outlined the importance of providing a safe environment and the basic services required for the process of voluntary and sustainable return. For their part, UN experts provided their perspectives on the best ways to fund and support early recovery programs, which aim to facilitate the transition of displaced persons from temporary shelters back to their homes and areas of origin.
This symposium takes place as the Syrian government continues its international efforts to shift the approach to the humanitarian file in Syria. The government aims to transition from a focus on emergency relief to a phase of sustainable recovery. This shift reflects a strategic direction toward reducing reliance on camps and working to restore normal life across various Syrian provinces. The initiative represents a component of the political and diplomatic outreach led by the Syrian Foreign Ministry to strengthen coordination with active international organizations and ensure that humanitarian visions align with the requirements of national development and stability.
