Syria’s Interior Minister Orders Probe into Death of Mohamed Ghamira

Syrian Interior Minister Anes Khattab has issued an administrative order establishing a formal committee tasked with investigating the death of a young man identified as Mohamed Ghamira. The move, announced on Sunday, aims to determine the precise causes and circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to an official statement released by the Ministry of Interior via its Telegram channel, Administrative Order No. 471 mandates a comprehensive inquiry into the case. The committee is led by the Assistant Minister of Interior for Police Affairs, Major General Ahmed Mohammed Latouf. The team also includes the Minister’s Advisor for Legal Affairs and Human Rights, Brigadier General Samer Mahmoud Al-Hussein; the Director of the Department of Issues and Disciplinary Pursuits, Brigadier General Muaz Khaled Al-Jamal; and the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Brigadier General Hussein Allawi Al-Hamadi.

The order stipulates that the committee will convene at the discretion of its chairman and is required to submit its findings to the Ministry within 72 hours of the issuance of the directive. Furthermore, the committee has been granted the authority to consult with any external parties deemed necessary to complete its mission effectively and impartially.

Following the announcement, Minister Khattab expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, Mohamed Hossam al-Din Ghamira. In his statement, the Minister underscored the government’s commitment to accountability within state institutions. He emphasized that any violations or excesses committed by personnel serving under the Ministry of Interior will be met with strict disciplinary measures in accordance with established legal procedures. The Minister further affirmed that any individuals found to have acted in violation of the law will face justice as soon as the investigation is concluded.

The formation of this investigative body reflects the Ministry’s stated intent to address concerns regarding the incident and to uphold institutional oversight. As the investigation proceeds, the public and relevant authorities await the committee’s report to clarify the facts of the case, which has drawn attention to the necessity of professional conduct and adherence to legal standards by security and police personnel.
