Syria Honors Students for Success at International Nuclear Olympiad
In a formal ceremony held in Damascus, Syrian scientific and educational authorities honored the national team that participated in the third edition of the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO 2026). The event, which recognized both the students from the National Center for Distinguished Students and their scientific supervisors, highlighted the country’s ongoing commitment to fostering academic excellence in specialized scientific fields.
The recognition was hosted jointly by the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission and the Commission for Excellence and Creativity. This collaboration reflects a broader national strategy aimed at nurturing high-achieving students and preparing them for competitive engagement on the global stage. During the ceremony, accolades were presented to students who secured notable placements in the competition, which saw participation from 19 countries. Among those honored were Karam Halloum, who was awarded a silver medal, and Bashara Nashed and Alaa Saud, who each received bronze medals. The ceremony also recognized student Mohammad Halli for his performance, alongside the scientific staff who managed the rigorous preparation program.
The training program provided to the team was developed by experts at the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission. It focused on critical pillars of nuclear science, including nuclear physics, radiological protection, and the peaceful applications of radiation. Furthermore, the students underwent intensive practical training involving nuclear measurements and experiments designed to simulate the high-level technical standards required by international competitions.
Officials emphasized that this achievement serves as an important milestone in Syria’s scientific record. They noted that the results demonstrate the effectiveness of current educational initiatives in promoting innovation and scientific development. The International Nuclear Science Olympiad, which was formally established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2024, is designed as a platform to encourage youth to specialize in nuclear technologies, promote the safe and peaceful use of such applications, and inspire the next generation of researchers to develop innovative solutions in the field.
The ceremony, attended by the Director of the Syrian Science Olympiad and members of the scientific committee for nuclear sciences, underscored the importance of the partnership between national bodies in facilitating these accomplishments.
