Syria and Denmark Hold Talks on Development Cooperation and Refugees

A Syrian delegation, headed by Nahla Othman, Director of the Expatriates and Refugee Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has held an official meeting with Elisabeth Saugmann-Hansen, State Secretary for Development Policy at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting focused on discussing bilateral cooperation and addressing shared challenges.

The discussions primarily centered on exploring prospects for a developmental partnership between Syria and Denmark. During the session, the Syrian delegation outlined national priorities regarding the early recovery phase, emphasizing the necessity of reconstruction projects to support the country’s infrastructure. The Syrian side highlighted the importance of directing aid and development cooperation in alignment with national objectives. Furthermore, they stressed the need to adopt mechanisms that ensure direct partnerships with the Syrian government to guarantee the effectiveness and sustainability of these projects.

A significant portion of the dialogue was dedicated to the issue of the return of Syrians to their homeland. Both parties exchanged views on the requirements for reintegrating returnees into Syrian society and ensuring the necessary conditions for their return. The participants emphasized the need for concerted international efforts and cooperation on this humanitarian and political file, while taking into account the priorities established by the Syrian state to ensure the safe and dignified return of its citizens.

These discussions take place within the framework of Syria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic coordination with European nations regarding critical files, particularly those related to economic development and the return of displaced persons and refugees. The Syrian delegation underscored the pivotal role of direct partnerships in supporting the aspirations of the Syrian people toward recovery and the restoration of stability, in accordance with national sovereignty and the plans developed by the relevant institutions in Damascus.
