Severe Damage at Tishreen Power Plant; Gas Supplies Gradually Resuming

Jabr Al-Rifai, director of the Tishreen power generation plant in Rif Dimashq, has reported significant material damage following a fire at the facility. According to official statements, the blaze severely impacted the station’s pressure reduction unit and the primary gas pipeline responsible for supplying the gas turbines. The damage also extended to electrical transformer insulators, as well as diesel and emergency pumps.

Al-Rifai stated that maintenance teams, working in coordination with staff from the Syrian Petroleum Company, acted immediately upon the outbreak of the fire. To contain the situation and prevent the flames from spreading, crews successfully closed a main valve located five kilometers from the plant, effectively cutting off the gas supply.

The incident had a notable impact on the national electrical grid. Al-Rifai confirmed that the resulting sharp drop in gas pressure triggered protective systems at various generation facilities, leading to the emergency shutdown of the Al-Nasiriyah and Deir Ali plants. This caused a significant reduction in power output, resulting in increased electricity rationing across multiple regions.

Efforts to stabilize the situation and initiate recovery are currently underway. Following coordination with the Syrian Petroleum Company to isolate the damaged pipeline, gas pressure has begun to return to normal levels. Consequently, the Al-Nasiriyah and Deir Ali plants have gradually resumed operations. Al-Rifai noted that teams are working to ensure sustained pressure stability in the coming hours, which will facilitate the restoration of electricity supplies to previous levels. To compensate for the lost production capacity at Tishreen, the Syrian Electricity Company is utilizing other plants, including Jandar, to maintain grid supply.

The Syrian Electricity Company previously issued a statement confirming that both the Al-Nasiriyah and Deir Ali plants in Rif Dimashq have returned to full operational capacity following the stabilization of the necessary gas flows.
