‘Ru’a’ Art Exhibition Showcases Vitality of Syrian Contemporary Art
The Arab Cultural Center in the Abu Rummaneh district of Damascus hosted the “Ru’a” (Visions) collective art exhibition on Sunday. The event serves as a platform for a selection of Syrian artists to display their diverse visual experiences, offering a broad range of works that underscore the vitality of the contemporary art scene in Syria.
The exhibition features a variety of artistic schools and directions. Each participating artist highlights the uniqueness of their individual experience, exploring fundamental themes such as humanity, beauty, and memory. The artists utilize rich visual tools, including line formations, color palettes, and various plastic elements, to foster an artistic dialogue that reflects the depth of research and experimentation within contemporary Syrian art.
On the sidelines of the exhibition, artist Reem Bismar noted that such events provide the audience with the opportunity to understand the methods behind constructing a painting and forming its space. She highlighted how techniques such as abstraction, figuration, and expressionism—alongside the interplay between color and form—are used to convey various emotional and human states. Similarly, artist Wafiq al-Bushi observed that the displayed works reflect serious efforts to develop a visual language and renew tools of expression. He added that this provides artists with broader space to interact with their environment and transform their artistic vision into a visual discourse that extends beyond the boundaries of the canvas.
Artist Qamar Warda explained that collective exhibitions create a vital space for cultural dialogue. She noted that these events help introduce the public to contemporary Syrian art experiences and open new horizons for younger generations to present their work and improve their engagement with cultural institutions. Mohammad Subhi al-Sayyid Yahya, head of the Fine Arts Syndicate, emphasized that the exhibition embodies the ability of Syrian art to innovate and pursue unconventional creative paths. He noted that the paintings raise human and aesthetic questions that reflect the reality of society and the ability of the Syrian artist to create visual languages that remain open to the future.
This exhibition continues the efforts of the Arab Cultural Center in Abu Rummaneh to host Syrian artistic experiences. The center previously hosted the “Pulse of Art” exhibition on June 7, which featured thirty artists who presented approximately seventy diverse works, reaffirming the ongoing presence of fine art as an essential component of cultural life in Syria.
