Macron Reaffirms France’s Support for Syria’s Sovereignty
During his address to the current session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Syria’s efforts to restore its full sovereignty and territorial integrity. Macron emphasized that France continues to work toward enabling the Syrian state to reclaim its foundations, while stressing the importance of upholding the aspirations of the Syrian people.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, President Macron met with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa. The two leaders held discussions regarding regional and international developments and explored prospects for bilateral relations, focusing on ways to enhance cooperation across various areas of mutual interest.
In his broader address, the French President highlighted several pressing international issues. He called for the reform of the UN Security Council, advocating for the inclusion of new members and noting that a lack of justice hinders the achievement of global peace. Macron also expressed his rejection of international inaction regarding serious violations of international law, demanding decisive action to address them.
Addressing regional crises, Macron identified the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz as a priority for ensuring stable energy supplies. He announced that Paris is coordinating with Washington to submit a draft resolution to the Security Council aimed at establishing an international mission to address this issue. Furthermore, the French President criticized the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, suggesting that the ongoing violence and political stagnation regarding these issues reflect a decline in the credibility of the international community.
Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Macron reiterated France’s position in support of efforts to end the conflict. He emphasized that France will continue its endeavors to encourage direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, in a move intended to serve the interests of international security and stability.
