Justice Minister: Protests Respond to Violations in Syria

Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais stated that the demonstrations held across several Syrian governorates on Friday served as a clear popular and legal response to repeated Israeli actions within Syrian territory, including incursions into the governorates of Daraa and Quneitra.

In a post on the X platform, Minister al-Wais noted that these popular gatherings represent a national message emphasizing the Syrian people’s commitment to the unity of their land. He stressed that the awareness and cohesion of the Syrian people serve as a strong barrier against all attempts to incite strife and destabilize the country. The Minister characterized these protests as an explicit condemnation of the crimes and violations committed by Israeli forces against the Syrian population.

Minister al-Wais specifically highlighted a recent incident in which a young man with special needs was killed by Israeli forces. He described the event as a clear crime that violates human values and moral standards. Furthermore, he emphasized that the Syrian state remains committed to the rule of law and justice as the primary foundation for defending national rights in all international forums.

Across multiple Syrian governorates, citizens—including families of victims and detainees—held mass protests today. Participants condemned the ongoing Israeli incursions in southern Syria, which involve house raids, detention operations, land leveling, and the targeting of civilians with shelling.

These popular movements occur amid an escalation in Israeli violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. Earlier this month, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates issued a statement condemning in the strongest terms the increasing incursions by Israeli forces in the Daraa and Quneitra regions. These activities have been accompanied by intensified aerial maneuvers involving warplanes, helicopters, and reconnaissance aircraft, which the ministry described as a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and a direct threat to the security and safety of Syrian citizens.

Recent tensions in southern Syria have escalated due to these repeated incursions. On Thursday, a young man was killed in the village of Jamla, in the western countryside of Daraa, during an operation carried out by Israeli forces. This incident intensified the popular anger that led to the protests, which were held to express widespread rejection of these ongoing practices.
